Poems from the Platform

New Milton Town Mayor, Alvin Reid, unveiled the five winning poems from the Friends’ first poetry competition held in partnership with the Play on Words Festival.

Poets were invited to submit their poems on the theme of ‘travel’. 22 poems were sent in with all the poets invited to the unveiling and the opportunity to read aloud for all to enjoy.

Lucy Kelleher was the overall winner of the competition with her poem titled ‘The Journey from Waterloo’.

The poems were judged by a panel drawn from local businesses and organisations.

The event was attended by the poets, Friends, judges and Bridget Floyer from Artful Scribe the sponsors of the Festival.

The Friends also ran a mystery book giveaway inviting passengers to choose a book wrapped in brown paper with just the first line visable. As the saying goes – never judge a book by it’s cover!

This was kindly organised for us by the New Milton Sands WI and was a great success!

All 22 poems were published in a booklet sold to raise funds for the No.1 Project.
